Description
This oil painting is of the JOHN WESLEY sailed by Capt. J. Hutton. The ship was owned by Parker Bros. The painting is signed "S.A. Whipple, 1880" in the viewer's lower left corner. The three masted schooner is depicted with full rig showing and a small tug on the port stern. A lighthouse is in the distance.
Seth Arca Whipple was born at New Baltimore, Michigan on February 11, 1855. After a brief employment in his teens as a draftsman and engraver, he began painting and soon gained important clients among Detroit's shipping companies. He also served short stints as captain of small commercial schooners owned by his father.
Later in life, Whipple married Edith M. McKittrick, the daughter of William McKittrick. Both were active in the city's amateur music and theatre community. Seth was an organist and music director of the St. Thomas Episcopal Church choir. Whipple died suddenly on October 10, 1901 at the age of forty-six, while working at his easel.
