Description
Oil painting: "The Wreck of the Steamer WALK-IN-THE-WATER, Nov. 1, 1821"; cream-colored sidewheel steamer is being blown on shore in rough seas; wind-blown trees on beach, lighthouse in distance; passengers are embracing on deck, being lowered into a yawl in the water, and on beach a group of men hold a line to guide passengers ashore. One of a pair done for Mrs. Thomas Palmer by John Lee Douglas Mathies of Buffalo (deck scene is at Burton). Wood panel, slightly warped, is inscribed on back: "Thomas Palmer, Hamtramck." See Michigan Pioneer Hist. Coll. V4, 1881, p. 112 for Mrs. Palmer's account of the wreck. In plain, dark wood frame. Restored by DIA. DIA #13.25 bequest of Sen. T.W. Palmer.
