24 MARINE REVIEW. Testing the '¢ Alabama." MARYLAND STEEL COMPANY, Sparrow's Point, Md., May 2d, 1893. Vacuum O1L'Co.: Replying to your letter, we have to state that we have used Vacuum Marine Oil for valves and cylinders on the trial trip of the steamer ' Alabama." The "Alabama" is a steamer of 2000 tons, having triple-expan- sion four-cylinder engines; H. P., 24% ; I. P., 43 inches; H. P. Cylinder, 160 lbs.; Revolutions on trial trip, 101 per m., giving piston speed of 707 feet per m,, and developing 2200 h. p. and a speed of 19 miles per hour. The oil was fed to crank pins by wicks of eight strands of zephyr yarn, giving ample lubrication without hand oiling. We consider your Vacuum Marine Engine Oil equal in all respects as a lubricant to the best quality of sperm, olive or lard oil; and your 600 W Cylinder Oil is equally as good as a valve lubricant.
