COAST SHIP BUILDING, As usual the naval work predominates in coast ship building, and some twenty-one naval vessels, with a valuation of $17,500,600 in course of construction or completion or, as in the case of the Newport News com- pany, just contracted for, shows a good condition of affairs in coast yards, and as compared with last year nearly three times as great, excluding the valuation of the two American liners St. Louis and St. Paul. There arc in coast yards 105 merchant vessels and pleasure craft, with a valuation of $6,040,400. Over one-half of the valuation is made up of passenger vessels for coast service, but there are no large general cargo carrying vessels under construction, which isa sad comment on the United States coastwise carrying trade. The most interesting work in coast yards is the $800,000 paddle-wheel steamer for Hudson River service and the $625,000 passenger steamer for the Plant line. In the river yards there are building twenty- four vessels of all kinds with a total valuation of $537,650. This is more than double the valuation of new work last year. Summing up the condi- tions in all parts of the United States, the new work in lake and coast yards shows an increase of nearly two-thirds and river yard work one-half. We are indebted for the information to coast ship builders who have tome to recognize the REVIEW's annual report as being valuable and in- teresting and the response to our inquiries was so general that no apology concerning its fullness and reliability is necessary. In this connection we we congratulaee our advertisers on the prospects of a very profitable year, THE WM. CRAMP & SONS SHIP AND ENGINE BUILDING 00,, PHILADELPHIA.
