MARINE Old Time Ships. LISTS OF SIDE-WHEELERS AND SAILING VESSELS ON LAKE ERIE, 1835 TO 1840--NAMES OF MEN WHO WERE IN CHARGE OF THEM, The venerable Capt. Barton Atkins of Butfalo takes considerable pride in records of early navigation on Lake Erie, which he has been collecting for a great many years past. Previous to 1842 there were few if any propellers on the lakes. Steam vessels were all of the side- wheel kind. Capt. Atkins has favored the Review with several lists of these steamers, noting in most cases the names of their officers. These names, both of vessels and officers, will be especially interesting to the older class of vessel men: MASTERS aND MATES OF SIDE-WHEEL STEAMERS OPERATING ON LAKE ERIE IN 1840. STEAMERS. |. TONS.
