1899. } MARINE REVIEW. eal TRADE NOTES. H. F. Dagwell has laid the keel at Indian River, Mich., for a small wooden passenger steamer---70 feet long and to be supplied with a 10 by 10-inch engine. A fore-and-aft compound engine, a marine fire-box boiler and a steam steerer, taken from the wrecked steamer H. A. Tuttle, are advertised for sale elsewhere in this issue by E. G. Crosby & Co., of Muskegon, Mich. The Falls Hollow Staybolt Co. of Cuyahoga Falls, O., has just received a large order from the W. & A. Fletcher Co., of Hoboken, N. aecetor safety hollow staybolts, made from the best quality of steel,to be used on a government contract. The Falls company is in position to fill orders promptly for its product, made from either steel or charcoal iron. Charles Longstreth, vice-president of the United States Metallic Pack- ing Co., Philadelphia, and Albert J. Zwart, western agent of the company, who is located at 1003 Marquette building, Chicago, have been calling on vessel owners in lake cities during the past, especially such of them as are building new steamers that will be using steam at high pressures. With high pressure steam, metallic packing is required, and the Philadelphia company is enjoying a very large trade in marine lines of late on account of the general tendency towards quadruple expansion engines and in many cases water tube boilers. The Sheriffs Manufacturing company, Milwaukee, Wis., has orders for Sheriffs wheels as follows: One of 11 feet diameter for steamer F. & P. M. No. 5; one of 7 feet 8 inches diameter for the Dunham tug J. C. Evans, under charter to the Flint & Pere Marquette Ry. Co. at Luding- ton; one of 8 feet diameter for the tug John Gregory at Cleveland; one of 6 feet 10 inches diameter for the tug Fred A. Lee at Sault Ste. Marie. Wheels wf 4 feet 8 inches and 4 feet 9 inches diameter, respectively, have also been shipped to New Orleans, La., and Stillwater, Minn., within a few days past. M. T. Davidson, steam pump builder of New York, is also the sole manufacturer of the widely-known Baird evaporators, the patents of which he now owns. For some time past he has been very busy with evaporator work and is now building a number of these machines for the torpedo boats and destroyers in course of construction for the United States government. Mr. Davidson furnished evaporators for more than a dozen naval vessels during the war, and constructed the entire distilling apparatus for the United States distilling ships Iris and Rainbow. More than 200 Baird evaporators are now in actual use in steam yachts and vessels of the United States navy and the merchant marine.--Marine Journal, New York. S.
