26 MARINE REVIEW. [November 28, SHIP BUILDING IN PHILADELPHIA AND VICINITY. Philadelphia, Nov. 27, 1901.--_The new freight and passenger steamer Calvert, built by the Neafie & Levy company for the Weems Steamship Co. of Baltimore, was launched from the yard of that company last Satur- day. Miss Matilda Williams, daughter of Henry Williams, president of the Weems line, was sponsor for the vessel. The Calvert is 190 ft. long, 40 ft. beam and 11 ft, 6 in. deep. Her power will be contained in a com- pound engine with cylinders of 20 and 40 in. diameter by 28 in stroke. There will be one boiler of the Scotch type, 14 ft. 9 in. in diameter by 12 ft. long, with steam pressure of 125 lbs. per square inch. When com- pleted the Calvert will ply between Baltimore and Chesapeake bay points. Preparations are nearly complete for the launch of the cruiser Denver at the Neafie & Levy yard. President Seddinger says it will not be more than two months before the vessel plunges into the Delaware. The tor- . pedo boat destroyer Barry still remains on the ways. Her construction, however, is far advanced and when she goes overboard it will be with steam in her boilers and ready to proceed on her trial trip. The Bain- bridge is at sea undergoing her acceptance trials. The builders of this trio of destroyers are awaiting with intérest the result of the experiment made in altering the stem lines of the Bainbridge. Constructor Hanscom, who is on duty here, believes that her speed will be increased at least a knot by the water running off more readily and insists that an improve- ment has been gained over the original design. Nearing completion in the ship yard of John H. Dialogue & Son, Camden, is a large ocean-going tug, which will be a valuable addition to the local fleet. She is building for A. S. Hughes' Sons for ocean towing and is of steel, 100 ft. long, 22 ft. beam and 12% ft. deep. Her engines measure 15 and 30 by 22 in. When launched she will be christened John P. Hughes. At Roach's Ship Yard, Chester, the steamship City of Memphis, building for the Savannah line, is now being plated. Her engine is prac- tically complete and will be ready long before the hull is ready to receive it. A syndicate of capitalists from Saginaw, Mich., is purchasing a fleet of barges to ply between Philadelphia and Port Arthur in the Texas oil carrying trade. The barge Chicago, formerly a New York ferry boat of the same name, has been sold by Peter Hagan of this port, to Arthur Hill of Saginaw, who represents the syndicate, for $10,500. The barges are to be towed up and down the coast by steam vessels. The syndicate con- templates purchasing sufficient vessels to land 1,000,000 gallons of oil at Philadelphia every month. The Pintsch system of car and buoy lighting has received gold medals and the highest awards for excellence and efficiency at_the world's ex- -positions at Moscow, Vienna, St. Petersburg, London, Berlin, Paris and Chicago; also at Atlanta and at the Pan-American exposition at Buffalo. This system of lighting is controlled in the United States and Canada by the Safety Car Heating & Lighting Co., 160 Broadway, New York city. It is reported that the Portland Ship Building Co., which at present operates a marine railway at South Portland, Me., purposes engaging in ship building on a more extended scale. It is now securing land adjoin- ing its present plant.
