1903.] MARINE REVIEW AND MARINE RECORD. xxiii MACLEAN HYDRAULIC SIGNAL. The MacLean hydraulic signal, illustrated herewith, is an engine room telegraph which is named after Capt. Donald Mac- Lean, a well known captain on the lakes of many years experi- ence. It has been quietly worked out in practical use on the Puritan and. other steamers during the last two years and is now in shape to stand the stresses of actual use and give perfect service in emergencies. The Erie & Western Transit Co.'s elegant passenger steamer, 'Tionesta, recently launched by the De- troit Ship Building Co., and which is to be one of the finest vessels of the lakes, has one of these machines and others have been ordered very freely, for a new invention. The construction is strong and simple and the power (hy- draulic) is' immense. The bal- ance is such that the machine works very easily over dis- tances up to 500 ft. length and 40 ft. elevation, while the liquid will not freeze up or evaporate. A bell rings con- tinuously in both the engine room .and bridge ends of the signal until the signal has been obeyed, and the last signal given is shown by the position of the lever or needle on the instrument. The company is adapting the same apparatus to controlling the steam whistle and the wheelsmen, if spss: desired. With the engine room, wheel house and whistle appa- ratus installed at each end of the vessel, the captain may go ahead or back down a river without the assistance of the mates and deck hands. He can control all three from a single position at either end of the boat, whereas in backing down at present he generally remains on the bridge to operate the whistle and direct the wheelsman, using the mate and a megaphone at the rear. The apparatus will soon be exhibited for a short time in cperation in the Perry-Payne building at Cleveland and other means will also be taken to bring it to the attention of vessel owners, captains and engineers. A stock company has recently been organized to market the invention under the name of the Macl, ean Hydraulic Signal Co., with offices at 317 and 319 Man- hattan building, 315 Dearborn street, Chicago, which is on the floor below the custom house in Chicago and is therefore con- venient of access to captains and owners. The Chicago Pneumatic Tool Co. has issued invitations to all of its representatives, both of this country and in Europe, to attend a general meeting, which will be held at the general offices of the company, 1o1o0 Fisher building, Chicago, on Jan. 5. It is proposed at this meeting to have the reports of representatives dealing with the trade conditions in the various parts of the ciy- ilized world gone over very carefully and a more thorough under- standing secured of the requirements of both foreign and domes- tic customers. It is proposed to transact foreign business by American methods and it is therefore necessary to have all the representatives of the company keep in close touch with each other. It is expected that this general meeting will be repeated each year as it will enable the company to fulfill customers re- quirements more satisfactorily. 5 Reasons why Dearing Water Tube Boilers are best # # # Ist Greatest space economisers. 2d Greatest fuel economisers. 3d Produce absolutely dry steam. 4th Maintains steady water line under severest forcing. 5th Explosion an impossibility.
