No. .11 WELDING STERN FRAME OF APACHE The details of welding the break on the stern frame, or more properly speaking, the shoe or skeg of the steamer Apache of the Clyde line on July 28 last, are given as follows: . GENERAL VIEW. MOLD IN POSITION. The Apache was placed in drydock about. 1 p. m. The dock was a graving dock, and the water was entirely pumped out at 2:15 p. m. Propeller wheel was removed and _ shaft drawn in to the hull, for the purpose of examining same for the benefit of underwriters. It was not necessary 'to remove the wheel and shaft to perform the work. The shoe, or skeg, as it will be afterward referred to, has been broken and MOLD IN POSITION. READY TO PLACK CRUCIBLE. patched; two large plates had been placed, one on each side, about 2% in. thick each, and about 16 in. wide. Top and bottom plates had also been put on; forming a box, as it were, around the break. These were removed at 3:20 p. m. The break was found to be about 18% in. from the after side of what is termed the "stern post" (not the rudder post). A mold and mold box had been previously prepared from the blueprint, reproduced herewith. Allowances were made in the clay mold so that it could be fitted tight to the CHARGING CRUCIBLE WITH THERMIT.
