Campbell, presi- dent, which has been operating on the Bois Blanc Park service of this company on the Detroit river, closed her regular excursion season last' week and is now engaged in giving a series of excursions from Lake Erie ports. She gave an excursion from Cleveland on "Wednesday of this week and will giye another one on Tuesday next. The Columbia is an ideal pleasure craft, having a licensed carry- ing capacity of 3,506 passengers with a dancing floor capable of. accommodating 1,000 persons at one time. Her. deck spaces are entirely open, having no stateroom accommodation what-: ever, and she has proved immensely popular in the 18-mile run down the Detroit river from Detroit to Bois Blanc. The CANADIAN GRAIN RATES Fort William, Ont. Sept. 11--The Dominion Maritime Association has made the following minimum rates for the shipment of grain from Port Arthur and Fort William, for the fall season of 1903. The Columbia was built by the Detroit Ship Building Co. in 1902, and is 216 ft. long, 45 ft. beam and 12 ft. 6 in. deep. Her engines are triple expansion with cylinders 2114, 34 and 54 in. diameter by 36 in. stroke, supplied with steam from two Scotch boilers, 12 ft: diameter and 13 ft. 2 in. long. At McKee's Ship Yard, East Boston, Mass., the keel has just been laid for a new ferry boat for the Boston, Revere Beach & Lynn railroad, to be a duplicate of the Ashburnham. The Eastern Steamship Co.'s new steamer now building at a cost of $450,000 will be named Governor Cobb, in honor of the governor of Maine. pliance, and in the second by Oct. 15 it is practically certain that the Canadian shippers will be forced to move much of their grain to Buffalo on American vessels, and these are not included in the arrangement. So soon as the great mass of American tonnage is invited to assist in the movement of this Northwest Canada wheat, rates will be a matter of nego- tiation from day to day. The amount of, Canadian grain ton- nage, though it has grown enormously in the past few years, is not commensurate with the task before it, and the Canadian roads from the lakes to tidewater will be swamped with offerings of tonnage. Then, too, a lot of Canadian tonnage is now tied up for the season with ore charters from American ports at the head of the lakes. New grain has not yet begun to arrive here, but the roads have both overhauled their equipment and terminals, includ- ing elevators, and are ready for it. That there is to be a larger movement than in any past year everybody admits, and the feeling now is that it will be even larger than the con- servative element was willing to admit a few weeks ago.
