'Contract for building locks Nos. 2 and 3 in Tombigbee river, Ala., have been awarded iby Maj. H. Jervey, gov- eminent senaineer,. to-r) OBrien, Anniston, Ala., upon his bid of $740,- 001.25. The other bid received was from Lane Bros. Co., Lynchburg, Va., at $842,610. RULING ON DREDGES. The war department has just made a ruling that no dredge will be con- structed from appropriations for river and harbor improvements unless the legislation authorizing such improve- ments specifically directs that the dredge be constructed. This ruling of the department was made upon an application for a dredge to serve the western shore of Lake Michigan. Dur- ing the past three or four years dredges have been built and operated by the engineers of the war depart- ment: There has always been opposi- tion to the practice as a direct in- fringement upon private' enterprise. There are many dredging concerns on the lakes both willing and competent to do the work quite as cheaply as the government can do it. CALENDARS.
