1902.] MARINE REVIEW. 25 LAUNCHING EMPEROR WILLIAM'S YACHT. The secretary of the imperial admiralty, Admiral von Tirpitz, and the chief of Emperor William's personal military staff are to accompany Admiral Prince Henry of Prussia to the United States. The other mem- bers of the prince's suite will be Vice-Admiral Baron von Seckendorf and Adjutants von Schwind and von Egidy, Capt. von Trotha, the emperor's aide-de-camp, Capt. von Mueller, Com'dr von Grumime and Staff Surgeon Reich. Admiral von Seckendorf, who announced these selections, said: "The emperor personally is making all the arrangements that can be made on this side. The details as to how Prince Henry shall spend his time in the United States are left to Secretary Hay and Dr. von Holleben, but our general idea of the dates is this: We arrive on the Kronprinz Wilhelm Feb. 22 at New York, and not at Hampton Roads, as first reported. Prince Henry will go on board the Hohenzollern and will stay there till the launching of the emperor's new yacht. We go to Washing- ton to see the president, and, perhaps, stay there several days. Emperor William has ordered the Hohenzollern to be fitted out with all the accessories used when he is on board the yacht. ee Mr. William Wallace Downey of the ship building firm of Townsend & Downey, which is building the yacht, has called upon President Roose- velt and arranged for the launching. This general design, you see, fills up about four weeks--one week in going each way and a fortnight in the United States." It was suggested to Admiral von Seckendorf that two weeks were not enough for the prince to see much of the United States, and that he ought to spend a longer time, and go west and south, to which he replied: "It would be difficult for his royal highness to spend a much longer time, though the Deutschland's sailing can be delayed a day or two, if it seems desirable. An invitation from Chicago is mentioned, I see, but I am unable to say whether it will be accepted. That will be left to your people. Prince Henry simply wishes to spend his time as Washington may think to be to his best advantage. He looks forward with keen interest to the trip, and expects to get pleasure and instruction out of it." "The president,' Mr. Downey said, "was at first in favor of having the yacht launched on Feb. 27, but when I told him that the tidal conditions would be more favorable on Feb. 25, he said he could arrange his engage- ments to suit that date. Admirals Evans and Crowninshield and the German ambassador sanctioned this. We have not decided at what point we will take the president and his party aboard one of our steamboats for transportation to Shooter's Island. It may be at the Battery. We will issue about 2,000 personal invitations to the launching and we will see that all our guests get an unobstructed view of the ceremonies, We have been flooded with offers from German singing societies and bands to furnish music at;the launching, but we think the government bahds' will be all that can be accommodated."
