Late in the afternoon the launching party repaired to the Toledo Club where dinner was served. The tables were ar- ranged in the shape of a horse-shoe and were beautifully decorated with roses. Owing to the fact that an early train had to be taken for Cleveland the speech-making was neces-: sarily of brief duration. As it. was, however, Mr. C. O. Jenkins made the most of his opportunity as toastmaster. He read a number of telegrams from persons who were unable to be present, the list including vessel owners both old and young and many others who are concerned in lake trade. He then proposed a toast to Mr. James P. Walsh, general sales manager of the Pittsburg Coal Co., for whom the boat is named. In his response Mr. Walsh said that speech-making was not his forte, but nevertheless he spoke well, saying that he had watched the development of great lakes trade from little boats to the great steamers like the Walsh and that he would do what he couid to make the Walsh a successful vessel. Mr. George Sliney of Cleveland made an extremely witty and humorous speech which caused everyone to fairly shriek with laughter. It was so full of puns and plays upon words that it is utterly impossible to reproduce it. Mr. C. E. Sullivan of Cleveland also spoke quite wittily and hoped that the Walsh would prove a profitable investment. He ended his remarks by proposing a toast to the president of the United States which was drunk standing. Mr. Walter R. Gilbert said that the launch of the Walsh was a big thing but that a bigger event was the launch of C. O. Jenkins into the vessel business three years ago. He paid quite a tribute to Mr. Jenkins' energy in forming the company to build and operate the Walsh. Mr. George H. Eichelberger was asked to respond to the toast "The Builders." He did so quite happily, saying that a thing like the Walsh doesn't happen but is gradually ap- proached through years of experience. The Craig company, he said, was not to be measured by what it might do, but by what it had actually done. In reply Mr. George Craig-stated that the company had \ preved what it could do and hoped that it might have further opportunity to prove it again in the near. future. Mr. Edward Mancourt of Detroit and Mr. J. M. Fitzgerald of New York also spoke briefly commending Mr. Jenkins and the Craigs. '| Mr. H. N. Herriman was then called upon for a song but excused himself on the ground that he could not sing without an instrument. This was no way out of it, however, for Mr. Eicheiberger in prowling around discovered a piano in an adjoining apartment and had it hauled into the banquet room. The dinner was brought to a close by Mr. Herriman singing "Baffin's' Bay." The launching party. were conveyed from Cleveland to Toledo and back in a special car. The steamer Philip Minch on: her first trip loaded 8,617 tons of coal for Ft. William and took in 278 tons of fuel at the Ellsworth dock, Cleveland. Some fast work was done in loading. The fast plant dumped 118 cars or 5,775 tons of coal into the new boat in 4 hours, 45 minutes. ----_----. iw rower >9 Mr.-John Craig, president of the Craig Ship Building Co., Toledo, who has been quite ill is reported as slowly recovering.
