STEAM SCHOONERS. The typical freight coasting vessel on the coast is the steam schooner, a designation which to eastern men seems a con- tradiction in tertns. Illustrations are given herewith of two of these vessels, inboard profile and deck plans of the Mel- ville Dollar and deck plan and outboard profile of the Robert Dollar. The photographs Trae Marine REVIEW are triple-expansion with cylinders 16, 25 and 42-in. diameter by 33-in. stroke, allowed 170 Ibs. pressure. The boiler is 13 ft. 6 in. diameter and 11 ft. long, the heating surface being 1,650 sq. ft. and a grate area of 60. The Melville Dollar show exactly what these so-called schooners look like. They were designed primarily for the lumber trade "and aré. so con- structed as to carry very heavy deck loads of lum- ber. The Melville Dollar was built of steel at West Bay City, Mich, by F. W. Wheeler & Co. She was intended originally for car- rying lumber on the lakes, but was purchased by the Dollar Steamship Co. of San Francisco, who fitted her out on the Atlantic coast for a trip around the horn. The Melville is 239 ft. keel, 38 ft. beam and 14 ft.. deep. Her gross ton- nage is 1,380 and net ton- nage 1,103.
