Smith Lumber Co., Marshfield, Ore., is now en route from Baltimore to This steamer will be the largest lumber carrier on the Pacific, and is 295 ft. 6 in. long, 43 ft. beam molded, 21 ft. depth molded. She will carry 2,225,000 ft. of lumber and will be used exclusively by the Smith company in transporting lumber from Coos Bay. The first of the two suction dredges building for government work in New York harbor was launched at the yard of the Maryland Steel Co., Sparrow's Point, Md., and was christened by Hope C. Peters, daughter of Richard Peters, sales agent of the Pennsylvania Steel Co. She was named -the Raritan. This dredge is constructed of steel through- out and was designed by Major J. C. Sanford. The Raritan is 290 ft. over all, 274 ft. between perpendiculars, 47 ft. 6 in. beam and 28 ft. deep. The dredg- ing machinery consists of two 20-in. suc- tion pumps, the bins having a capacity of 2,000 cu. yds. Major Wm. These tenders are to be 100 ft. long, 20 ft. beam and 3 ft. deep, of the stern-wheel type with model baw, easy rake at stern, with three bal- anced rudders having iron rudder stocks © carried on ball bearings. The tenders are to have one pair of stern wheel engines with cylinders' 9 inches in diameter and 36 inches stroke, supplied with steam from boilers 14 ft. long and 36 in. diameter. : Bids were opened at Milwaukee re- cently for the construction of the foun- dation of the lighthouse to be erected © on White Shoal Rock, Lake Michigan.
