32 bulkheads throughout the liner, that the Tenyo Maru is practically "unsink- able. The main ofopeliine machinery of the Tenyo Maru is composed of Par- son's steam turbines. One H. P, tur- bine with rotor of 76 in. diameter is situated at the center of the engine room and one L. P. turbine with rotor of 106 in. diameter is placed on either side. Each turbine drives a separate shaft of 121/16 in. in diameter, fitted with one propeller. The reversing turbines, of ample power to insure efficient maneuvering, are incorporated with the L. Pyiturbifte casitig, the two side propellers' pene used for going astern. The turbives: are ies for a working boiler pressure of 180 Ibs. to the square inch, developing. about 17000 -H Peeat 2/08) B. M.. As.the turbines rotate in one direction only and are perfectly balanced, they do their work without noise and without - vibration. The triple propeller arrangement has. as much advantage over the twin screw system.as the twin screws are better than a single propeller. | Small- er propellers can be used, thus. re- ducing the chance of losing blades, and in case this happens to one pro- peller the liner is still as well off as the twin screw steamer. In the engine room are numerous powerful auxiliary engines, each one duplicated .as.a. provision. against break-down. There are 28 sets of pumps, two powerful evaporators. and one duplex distiller for the manufac- ture of fresh water. The steam generating plant consists of 13 single ended, Scotch boilers, 15 it...9..in. in. diameter and: 11 ft...6: in. long, having 52 Morrison's suspension furnaces and an aggregate heating surface of 37,660 sq. ft. working un- der Howden's forced draught. The boilers are arranged in two compart- ments enclosed by separate water-tight bulkheads with automatic water-tight doors of the long arm latest patent type. Each group of boilers has a common funnel of oval form with' di- ameters 12 ft..6 in. and 9. {t..6: in: The electric generating plant con- sists -of two sets.of 75 K. W.:+com- pound engine dynamos, one set being kept in reserve all the time. The wir- ing is done on the double distribution -box system and arranged so as to be accessible at all parts of the ship. -- Edgar Hough, who was mate of the steamer: John B.
