WHITE STAR TRAINING SHIP SCHEME FOR JUNIOR OFFICERS. The White Star Line has just offi- cially made known the particulars of their great scheme of training mer- cantile marine officers for the ships of their fleet and of the associated lines of the International Mercantile Marine Co. Owing to the ocean car- -rying trade having been largely transferred of late years from sailing TAE MARINE REVIEW whom the cadets will be careful regularly exercised atid inst and in addition to completing' general education, they will be taught the special subjects required to qualify them for their profession. It is intended to carry about 60 boys, preference being at first: given to those who have had preliminary training on the school ships Conway and Worcester. The vessel will be under the control of the White Star 21 The apprenticeship will be for four "years, or three years in the case of cadets who have satisfactorily served two years on the Conway and Wor- cester, and after this apprenticeship, on obtaining a second mate's certifi- cate, ex-cadets will be given the op- portunity under the new board of trade rules of joining steamers of a certain size and speed, and there in due course qualifying as mate and master. They have therefore acquired the fine Clyde- built clipper ship, Mersey, which is described in Lloyds Register as fol- lows: Length, 271 ft.; breadth, 39 ft.; tons, gross register, 1,829; ship rigged and classed Al at Lloyds. Under the commander there will be an ef- ficient nautical and education staff by Line, and will trade to all ports of the world, as circumstances may ren- der desirable, the first voyage being made from Liverpool to Sydney, New South Wales, on Aug. 20. The per- manent staff of the ship will consist of commander, chief mate, first mate, second mate, surgeon, head master (nautical), assistant master ~ (lan-. guages), carpenter, sailmaker, don- keyman, boatswain, three stewards, two cooks, three boatswain's mates as instructors, and ten able seamen for ordinary work until the cadets are sufficiently advanced to man the ship. Ismay's plan that continuation of ser- vice with the company is regarded as certain, and in view of the large num- ber of boys who wish to join the mercantile marine, there seems to be every reason why the Mersey should from the very beginning be a com- plete success. The terms for their education including accommodation, food and medical attendance on board will be as under, payable each year in advance: First year, $350; second year, $300; third year, $200; fourth year, $150.
