Strength of rivets over area of sec- tion equals 15,669.6--7,036.64 equals 8,632.96 tons for this plan, Fig. 45 'shows the butt of sheer strake SB, butt of stringer angle SDSBB, outer stringer, seam strap, inner stringer, hatch opening, hatch coamings and webs. Fig. 46 shows the arrangement of girders in bottom. The butts of girder plates and an- gles are shown with the same marks as before applied to Figs. 43 and 44. D girder shows the top angle with the horizontal flange cut. off. The web frames are built costally on a channel floor which is not usual on the lakes. In the four (4) girders there are 300 rivets on the point of shearing on each side of the vessel making a total of 600 rivets 34-in diameter and equal to 12 tons per rivet. 600 X 12 equals 7,200. Material in girders amounts. to 119.78 square inches. 119.78 X 26 equals 3,114.28 tons. The rivets exceed the plates and angles by 7,200--3,114.28 equals 085.72 tons. The shell butts are marked on Fig. 46 similar to other sketches SB, B, SBC, SBD and SBE the shell butts of strakes B, C, D and E. It "is necessaty to "have access throughout the bottom of the vessel and in cutting holes large enough for a man to pass through, care must be taken. not to decrease the area of section of the vessel in any way. On: Fis. 46, "manholes. are "so. at- ranged as to give access throughout the bottom and at the same time re- tain the strength of the girder plate. Example: 7 holes are punched for the girder stiffeners, thus reducing the area of the plate by 13/16 X 7 equals 5.7 inchés. The girder plate is notched out for the intermediate and tank top stiffeners which is 4 inch- es deep, so that the punching of the rivet holes for girder and tank top stiffeners reduces the girder plate 10 inches: a 4 X 10-in. equals 40 inches. This will show that two manholes 20. inches. deep may be cut in 4,- two girders in the same line across -- one side of the ship without in any way damaging or reducing | the strength of the vessel. Care must be taken to have these manholes clear ing. The total strength of the rivets. on the point of sfearing amounts to 66,707 tons. The total area of sec- tion of punched materials amounts inter--- -register, built in 1886. pressure. of butts of adjoining strakes of plat-_ 4 eee = "passenger accommodations. 'TRAE MARINE REVIEW to 47,491 tons. The total strength of the unpunched material amounts to 59,970 tons, The rivets exceeds the unpunched material by 7,000 tons. 'The connection of intercostals to the floors and frames, have not been considered in this calculation, The riveting in side stringers may | be considered the same as the ma- terial which is all that is necessary. The value of the rivets depends upon the shift of butts and arrange- ment in butt laps and straps. NEW STEAMSHIP COMPANY FOR ALASKA BUSINESS. MacKenzie Bros, Ltd., of Vancouver, B.C. have'. chartered the American steamer Leelanaw and the barges John C. Potter, Two Brothers and Oregon, 'which they announce aré to be the nucleus of a new fleet of vessels to be operated during the coming summet between Seattle and southeastern Alaska ports, the ports of call extending as far north as Nome. Kenzie, manager of MacKenzie Bros., has recently been in Seattle and made_ final arrangements for operating the' -new line with Seattle as the southern terminus. A contract has been made with the Arlington Dock Co. and the MacKenzie vessels will berth at piers 4, 5 and 6, The agreement goes into effect April 1, Leelanaw will commence running regu- larly to Skagway and Valdez, Alaska, via ports. When the Nome season opens the company will dispatch the Leelanaw to Norton 'sound. Being equipped with steam towing gear the Leelanaw will be able to handle barges without diffi- The barges will be used for coal and culty. transporting lumber, on the outward trips. Returning they will freight copper, ore and other raw material from the north. Bros., Ltd., have just closed a contract with the Sulzer mines, Prince of Wales island, for freighting 6,000 tons of copper ore per month to the Tyee smelter at Ladysmith, B.C. This con- tract runs two years. 'The steamship Leeanaw is a_ steel vessel of 1,923 gross and 1,377 net tons She is 274 ft. in length and 36 ft. beam. She has one triple-expansion engine 22): 35. and 88 in. in diameter by 42 in. stroke ; the boilers carry 154 lbs. per sq. 1. e. The steamer has freight and In the near future she will go into the dry dock at Esquimalt, where she will be thoroughly overhauled and equipped. About $25,- 000 will be expended in repairing the Capt. S.. 2. Mac-. after which date the rough cargo in addition to general merchandise | MacKenzie fl vessel. She will be fitted with addi- tional passenger accommodations. The Norwegian steamer Transit will form a part of the new line and will be dispatched from Seattle for Nome "not prior to June 5. Capt. MacKenzie, in an _ interview, said in part: "Prospects for business in Alaska never looked better than at present and I anticipate one of 'the © busiest years since the northern trade developed. There is a large amount of business in sight on the Skagway run and I expect our tonnage to be filled to the limit. We have never en- tered into a combination and our line will be operated strictly independent of all other concerns." RIVER AND HARBOR BILL. The. emergency river and harbor bill carrying an appropriation of $8,185,750. The general pur- pose "fot "the -< measure is to provide against delay of existing contract work. -- The bill also con- tains provisions for a settlement of the ownership in fee simple absolute by controversy existing over the in order, that the interests of naviga- tion may be defended at that point. The bill therefore declares that the ownership. is fee simple absolute by the United States of all lands: north of the present ship canal throughout sary for the purposes of "navigation.
