June, 1910 of the coal produced is dependent upon the folding and mechanical ma- terial mixed with the coal. Coal varies from a low grade of lignite to a fair grade of bituminous. In places there are found patches of so-called an- thracite, which is similar in chemical analysis to Pennsylvania anthracite, but there is no comparison in effici- ency of heating between the two. Chemical analyses which indicate high values in fixed carbon and low values in volatile matter are not safe guides for Washington coals. The status of coal development is far behind that of other natural resources. One of the large producing areas is located in Pierce county in the Wilkeson-Car- bonado district, 30 miles south of Ta- coma on the Northern Pacific rail- toad. Fhe coal in, this district 31s the best coking coal in Washington and supplies the Tacoma smelter. San Francisco and Hawaii were formerly markets for Washington coals, but of late, the industrial development has been such that much foreign coal has been imported, coming at a very low rate as ballast for the. lumber and grain carriers, from Wales, Japan, Aus- tralia and British Columbia. At pres- ent the Northwestern , Improvement Co. is mining about half the coal out- put, and the Northern Pacific railroad consumes the whole of its output. The Pacific Coast Coal Co. mines about 2 per cent, the major part of which is used by the liners of the Pacific Coast Steamship Co. At present the demand for coal exceeds the supply. The Washington coal is a good steam coal and is being used extensively on local boats. COMPARISON OF WASHINGTON STEAM COAL WITH OtTuer STANDARD.
