August, 1910 'TRAE Marine Review THis REMARKABLE PHOTOGRAPH OF A SEA BoarDING A VESSEL MEDITERRANEAN, Kingston Ship Building Co. HE operations which have been car- tied on during the last three months at the government dry dock, in Kingston, should be of special moment to the shipping interests on the great lakes. Hitherto vessels, which have had occasion to go into dry dock for Tepairs, have lost considerable time °n account of the lack of a properly equipped plant in connection with the dock, and the Dominion government, having Tealized the handicap under Which it was laboring, decided lately 10 lease the property, for which the Kingston Ship Building Co. has been the successful tenderer. In accordance with the terms of the "a8e, the company was to establish a ship building and repair plant and, although they only entered into pos- 'ssion of the dock on May 1 last. the onstruction work has been rushed through so rapidly that it is now equipped with the most modern ap- pliances to execute ship repairs of all _ kinds. The company has just completed the erection of a steel frame building in which all the necessary machinery, hoists, etc., for carrying on ship build- ing and repairs are fitted up; it has reserved the portion of the east side of this building for oil furnaces of the latest type and for bending slabs, and 'alongside are located the black- smiths' furnace and fires. The mold loft occupies the whole of the second floor. ee In the pump house, which is situat- ed on the east side of the dock, a compound vertical engine capable of developing 100 H. P. has been in- stalled to run the generator which supplies the motive power for the WAS TAKEN ON THE STEAMER CrASTER HALL IN THE THe PHoTOGRAPH WAS A SMALL Kopak FitmM, TAKEN FROM THE SPAR Deck Art, Looxinc Forwarp. plant, while a prominent feature is the 1,600 cu. ft. air compressor, from which pipe lines are led to the dock and the building berths. The dry dock, a view of which is shown in the company's advertisement in this issue, is situated near the cen- ter of Kingston harbor. It is 323 ft. long, 55 ft. wide at gate, with 16 ft. water over the sill and can accommo- date any vessel plying on Lake On- tario, and canal size freightérs will doubtless find it to their advantage to have any repairs that may be neces- sary done at this plant before pro- ceeding up the lakes, especially in the fall of the year. It is interesting to note that the company has already been successful in securing new construction, the Dominion government having award- ed to them the contract for a steamer _for the quarantine service at Grosse Isle. This vessel will be 113 ft. 3 in.
