August, 1910 : TAE MARINE REVIEW ZENITH City oN Rocks orr Point Au Sasie, LAKE Superior. -Stranding of Zenith City HE 'steamer Zenith City, of the T Pittsburg Steamship Co.'s fleet, bound down with ore, ran on the rocks off Point Au Sable, Lake Superior, about 4 o'clock on the afternoon of July 27, during a fog. The accident was an extremely unfortunate one in that had the steamer passed 50 ft. to port she would have avoided the ob- struction altogether. As it was, she went on hard for two-thirds of her length, giving her a pronounced list to starboard and quite a hump amid- ships. As she tore over the rocks, her spar deck described the undulations of a wave. Her starboard tanks leaked Ivecly, The tue §.. C. Setenee and lighter Reliance were sent to her re- lief, but did not reach her until 26 hours had passed, owing to lack of telephone and telegraph connections. Fortunately the weather continued favorable and the vessel suffered no additional injuries from the elements. She was released at one p. m., July 30, and taken to the Sault after part of her cargo had been lightered. She then transferred a further portion to the Maritana at the Sault and then proceeded to Cleveland, where the bal- ance of her cargo was unloaded. She then went into dry dock at Toledo. A survey revealed the fact that her Starboard side is in bad shape. About 60 plates are broken and will have to be replaced. Many frames will have to come out and the repairs will amount to a virtual. rebuild of the Starboard side. In addition some of the plates on the port side will have to be replaced. The damage extends Pretty well the whole length of the ship. For a length of 30 ft. amidships the rivets are sheared off as though ZenitH City in Dry Dock AT TOoLeEDo. The Zenith City will be in dry dock about a month and the cost of repairing her may reach $60,000. July Ore Shipments The ore movement during July was surprising, reaching a total of 6,945,- 289 tons, an increase of 252,264 tons over July, 1909, and coming within 371,303 tons of equalling the June record of the present year. The fleet has moved 21,863,549 tons up to Aug. 1, an increase of 6,468,199 tons over the corresponding period last year. In measuring this movement it must be understood that 20 per cent of the independent tonnage has been voluntarily laid up. It 'does not appear to have had any sensible effect on the trade, however, as the withdrawal has not been missed. The STARBOARD SIDE OF WATER Bottom,
