340 ern Railroad in 1883.. The next de- velopment were the bridge tramways with cantilevers for the Lake Shore Railway at Ashtabula in 1886. Then came a simple cableway for handling ore, built for Carnegie Bros. & Co., of Bessemer, Pa., in 1887. An excellent reproduction is also given of the first fast plant built for M. A. Hanna & Co., of Cleveland, in 1890. The illustrations then follow chrono- logically the installations at various Lake Erie ports, together with tram- ways, conveying bridges, bins, pig iron breakers and cranes erected at various furnace plants throughout the country. The concluding illustrations are of more recent installations for rapid handling of material at numer- ous furnaces. All of the illustrations are reproduced in photo-gravure and the catalog is a splendid one through- out. New Steamer Kulshan The Kulshan, a new steel passenger steamer for the Puget Sound Naviga- tion Co., was launched at the ship yards of the Moran Co., Seattle, on July 21. The Kulshan was described in Tue Marine Review of May, 1910, under the name Comanche. She will be put on the run from Seattle to Bellingham about August first. Her name was changed from Comanche to Kulshan in deference to the wishes of THE Marine REVIEW the residents of Bellingham. The Kul- shan was christened by Miss Irene Yarrow, of Bellingham, who was se- lected by popular vote of Whatcom county, after an exhaustive competi- tion extending over several weeks. Miss Yarrow was supported by Miss Noyes and Miss Ketzler, of Anacor- des, and Misses Fletcher, Andrews and Bonnevier, of Bellingham. When launched, the Kulshan was more near- ly complete than any similar vessel launched on the Pacific coast, being about 90 per cent finished. Her boil- ers and machinery were all in place and ready for commission. The only work remaining to be done was in connection with the interior uphols- tering and decoration. The new steam- er is 175 ft. long and her plans show a number of departures from the type of steamers usual on Puget Sound. The Puget Sound Navigation Co. has plans for several other vessels of similar type, to be built in the near future by The Moran Co, The Kul- shan's keel was laid on April 14, 1910. The Kulshan is fitted for oil fuel, car- ries a crew of 32, and on her builders' 'trial, July 31, made over 14 knots per hour, the contract calling for 13% knots. Work on the construction of the new -B. & ©. ore docks at Lorain is progressing rapidly.
