October, 1910 "TAE MarRINE REVIEW Leviathan American Coal Carrier & Co., Ltd., we are able to repro- duce a photograph, showing the launch during August of what is said to be the largest commercial coal carry- ing ship afloat. She was built. at "the= firm's --Mid- dlesbrough yard to the order of the Havana Coal Co., and her carrying cap- acity will be 8,500 tons. She is named RB the courtesy of Sir Raylton Dixon types of plant. There are to be five holds with large hatchways, 33 ft. by 21 ft, which will afford free play to any kind of grab or bucket from any part of the holds. It will be possible to load the vessel in ten hours, and to discharge her in 16 working hours. She will have eight winches. The engines are triple-expansion, 28 in., 46 in. and /7 in, and are calculated to give a 387 eries, Ottawa, Can., for the construc- tion of a twin-screw, steel lighthouse tender for the Pacific coast, to be deliv- ered at Victoria, B. €.°~ THe steamer will be 200 ft. long, 38 ft. beam and Ti. tt. 6, 1n.. deep. A Mosquito-Proof Steamer The first ocean-going mosquito-proof vessel, built for the African {trade 16 now in commission. Fittings are pro- vided against the intrusion of mosqui- . toes in the quarters of both passengers and crew. All doorways, side port open- ings, windows, skylights, ventilators and passages have been provided with mos- the Berwindmoor, and is the first of a fleet of leviathan coal carriers to run between Chesapeake ports and Cuba. The Berwindmoor is described as the latest creation as a self trimming coal Steamer, and she has been designed by Messrs. W. Esplen & Sons, of Liver- Pool. The vessel is a steel-screw steam- er, built on the Harroway-Dixon canti- lever principle. Her dimensions are: Length, 425 ft.; beam, 54 ft.; depth, 29 ft. The great carrying capacity of the vessel, namely, 8,500 tons, will be Provided for in handling by the latest loaded speed of 11% knots. Special attention has been given throughout to the engine work on account of the trop- ical trade, in which the Berwindmoor will be engaged, and she will be equipped with Contraflo condensers and evapora- tors. In all other respects the vessel will be thoroughly up-to-date. She will be lighted throughout with electricity and will carry a wireless installation on the De Forrest system, as well as a submarine signalling equipment.
