September, 1914 News while the Chesapeake & Ohio railway scale weight registered 475 tons the pneumercator registered 474 tons Model T-1 is designed to measure the depth and volume of any liquid or semi- liquid in tanks or reservoirs, and has been adopted by the U.S. Navy for measuring bunker fuel oil in the double bottom tanks. The U. S. Battleship New York has already been equipped with the device and installations are underway on the U. S. Battleship Oklahoma and Pennsyl- vania, building at Camden and Newport News, respectively, as well as_ the Argentine battleship Rividavia. The illustration of this model shows an an- nunciator attachment, which rings a bell and throws a signal, when the tanks are 95 per cent full, thereby preventing waste in bunkering. The: registering part of the device can be placed at any distance, either above or below the source of pressure and its accuracy is not affected by changes in temperatures, through which the. connecting pipe line may be led. Lagonda Co.'s New Plant The Lagonda Mfg. Co., of Spring- field, Ohio, are building a new addition to their already large and modern fac- tory to accommodate their rapid growth and increase the facilities for special- ized manufacture. In spite of the gen- eral business depression, the Lagonda Co. is forunate in having more business on hand at the' present time and for the past two months than they have had for years. Of late the plant has been running night and day, not be- cause of congestion or lack of manu- facturing facilities, but because of the large volume of business that is com- ing in, The Lagonda Mfg. Co. was originally organized as manufacturers of boiler tube cleaners. Specializing in this line, they have developed a complete line of turbine and mechanically driven scale removers to fit the many conditions met with in the different plants, Their present line of cleaners includes special types for boilers, condensers, econo- mizers, evaporators and other straight and curved tube apparatus. They are also the designers and manufacturers of the Lagonda cleaning device for Stir- . ling boilers, the well known Lagonda double-acting automatic cut-off valve and multiple water strainers. _ Their present large and well equipped factory will be given over entirely to the manufacture of boiler tube cleaners and specialties, and the new addition will be equipped for handling the larger and heavier class of work, such as their automatic cut-off valves and multiple Water strainers, the castings of which Tun into very large sizes. - THE MARINE REVIEW The new addition will be 110x60 feet, of brick and concrete construction with a steel supported slate monitor roof. The approved steel window sash and frame will be used throughout, so that the daylight lighting will be as nearly perfect as possible. In addi- tion to former equipment, a new 34- inch Gisholt Automatic Lathe, a large multiple drill and radial drill will be installed. A large 10-inch electric crane having a span of 36 feet will run the entire length of the building and over the railroad siding to facilitate handling of castings in the shop and for ship- ments. To cover the necessary demand for power, they are installing a new 100-horsepower gas engine. The Wonder of Wireless Ronald Ferguson, senior wireless operator on the Empress of Ireland, which was sunk off Father Point, Quebec, May 29, gives the following in- teresting account of his experience: Between the time of the collision and 357 the time that the dynamos went out of commission, he says, we had only eight minutes and in that time were able to summon two boats. My cabin was on the top deck, and immediately after the shock, I saw lights passing. I ran to the wireless room and called to the stations: "Stand by for distress sig- nals; have struck something." The station at Father Point answered immediately, asking where we were. I replied we were twenty miles off Rimouski, after which water got into the stokehold and cut off the dynamos. I then switched. to the receiver and got the following from Father Point: "O. K. Am sending Eureka and Lady Eve- lyn to your assistance." The ship then went down and I swam around until rescued and' taken aboard the Storstad. I immediately made my way to the Lady Evelyn which had wireless apparatus aboard, but no oper- ator, () dhe room), was... locked, butbs.t broke through the window and _ tuned up the apparatus with Father Point.
