THE MARINE REVIEW MEDiUM DUTY MILLING MACHINE WITH FULL AUTOMATIC FEED supplying this company with steel for some time, shipping more than 30,000 tons during the past year. The 10,000- ton freighter Union just launched at St. Nazaire, was built entirely of American steel. The accompanying photograph shows the keel for a large tanker in position at this yard. 'This plate was rolled from American steel, furnished by the Smith-Eisemann Corp. Miller For Heavy Duty Modifying its milling machine intro- duced several years ago, the Kemp- smith Mfg. Co., Milwaukee, has placed on the market a miller adapted to the medium-heavy classes of automobile, steam turbine, shipyard, airplane, trac- tor and machinery work. As shown by the accompanying illustration, the knee is of the solid top design, this construction serving to resist clamping strains and the torsional effect of the table overhang. The column is ribbed internally and is further strengthened by the reser- voir for the speed drive oil which forms a solid rib midway of the col- umn height. Drive from the saddle to the table is located near the end of the saddle, thus leaving the center solid. The table is 12 inches wide and 56 inches long. Arbor alignment is maintained by the wedge lock type. overarm, a solid steel bar 4% inches in diameter. Right hand spindle de- sign has been used so that the normal rotation is correct for standard drills and boring tools. Spindle reverse is included to get cutting strains in the proper direction on certain classes of work. A friction plate type clutch is oper- ated by a hand lever, where it can be reached easily. A brake operating on the reverse throw of the clutch lever overcomes the momentum of the spindle gear train and stops the spin- dle quickly. The drive pulley mount- ed on ball bearings and provided with a clutch takes a 3%4-inch belt and runs at 400 revolutions per minute. Two levers control the longitudinal move- ment of the table, one is for the feed and the other is for the power quick traverse. The knee and saddle move- ments are operated by a second set January, 1921 of two levers. Design is such that eighteen changes of feed ranging from %-inch to 25 inches per minute in geometrical progression are possi- ble with the feed change mechanism, Gears all are heat treated steel and run in an oil bath. When so desired the machine is arranged for motor drive through a belt, a 7'%-horse- power motor running at 1200 revolu- tions per minute being used. The range of the miller in power drive is 28 inches longitudinally, 10 inches transversely, and 19 inches vertically, Elaborate cooling and oiling systems are included in the features of the new machine. New Fuel Oil Heater The Griscom-Russell Co., 90 West street, New York, manufacturer of oil heaters of the coil type, has re- cently placed on the market a new SECTIONAL VIEW OF FUEL OIL HEATER
