Marine Business Statistics Condensed Record of Traffic at Principal American Ports for Past Year ' N y HILE the marine strike in April somewhat restricted clearances from American ports, the sail- ings in general held up as compared with March and showed an increase as against January and February. Clear- ances and perhaps entrances in May, however, will show a decided slump as compared with April, early reports show- ing clearances particularly reduced. The best sign of improvement at New York was seen in the fact that the clearances for April were much larger than the entrances, which is the most conclusive evidence that the shipping slump was about over before the strike set in. During February last the clear- ances were 50 ships short of the en- trances, whereas during March the clear- ances were 7 short of entrances. The class of business handled showed no change in general. Of the total. en- trances 61 ships came in ballast, 102 entered with bulk cargoes and 247 ves- sels brought. general cargoes. The traffic at Philadelphia in April was equal to that of the same month last year. The record of entrances and clearances in ballast was unusually small. American ships predominated among those entering and clearing in ballast. On the other hand, the record of en- trances and clearances in the coastwise trade made a record total for the port. It would appear from this that vessels are moving coastwise in order to pick up full cargoes, an indication of a more orderly management of the freighting business. The marine engineers' strike has been having its effect on the traffic at Phila- delphia since May 1. During the first week of May less than half the number of entrances were able to clear. The clearances during that week were 50 per cent of normal.
