Description
Late 19th century half-model of a Great Lakes sailing vessel, made by Erie-based mariner John Gray, probably during his retirement. Gray experienced first hand life on these vessels as he sailed out of Erie from 1847-1868, first as a sailor and later as captain. During this era, these types of ships carried mainly coal, iron ore, grain, and wood. The background for the model was painted by his son, noted cartographer Charles P. Gray, and depicts a shoreline recognizably typical of Lake Erie and the Erie area.
