January, 1925 considerable degree, an even regulation is maintained by the normal operation of the governor. Under regular operating conditions the governor will respond to an over speed of 3 per cent. The second feature is one of special interest, that is, in anticipating the speed of the engine. When a ship is running in a heavy sea, pitching as well as rolling takes place. This pitching, if severe, will bring the propeller out of the water and so cause speeding up of the engine. In a twin screw vessel, rolling as well as pitching will cause the propellers to come out of the water. The anticipating feature of this gov- MARINE REVIEW ernor, as shown in Fig. 1, consists of a balanced valve operated by a ball which is free to roll in a fore and aft di- rection. In vessels of the twin screw type, the anticipating valves’ are set at a small angle to the center line of the ship to take care of the conditions which obtain when one propeller is clear of the water. As the ship pitches and be- fore the propeller comes out of the water, the ball rolls in the direction of inclina- tion. The normal position of the track on which the ball rolls is adjusted to suit the trim of the vessel, so that the ball will remain at the aft end of the track, and not affect the valve until 19 pitching or rolling causes the track to assume an inclination forward. The ball in rolling to the forward end opens a needle valve and by-passes air to the power cylinder independent of any action of the oscillating weight, that is, the an- ticipating valve will begin to function be- fore there is any actual speeding up of the engine. When the ship has righted itself, the ball in this valve rolls aft, the vent in the pilot valve shown to the right in Fig. 3, lets the air escape and permits the piston of the power cylinder to come back to normal position, restoring the regular fuel supply to the engine.
