Just one more case where reliability demanded the “C-O” Each working day the engine installed in a ferryboat must undergo as many variations of service as would be met in weeks of ordinary service. There is the rapid change of pace from full speed ahead to idling speed for ma- neuvering. There are short runs with frequent stopping. Always there is the need for easy starting and flexible control. It is the kind of service that gives the Fairbanks-Morse Type “C-O” an oppor- tunity to demon- strate its reliability; and that is why the engine installed on the ferryboat “York” hasreceived so much praise from everyone who has seen itin operation. The installation is unusual in that the engine operates a double drive—one Note fittings on each end of engine for double drive propeller pulling at the bow; the other pushing at the stern. The engine, with fittings for coupling the propeller shafts at both ends, is illustrated below. It shows the ability of the Type “C-O” to conform to special conditions. When the ferry reaches port, and is ready for the return voyage, the engine is simply started in the reverse direction and the. boat is under way without coming about. The selection of the “C-O” for this busy craft is merely add- ed proof of the in- creasing preference for the Type “C-O” where ease of con- trolandabsolutede- pendability are the vital considerations. Type ‘‘C-O” Engines, in sizes from 30 to 360 hp., are conservatively rated to conform to the rules of the American Bureau of Shipping. This is because the upper part of the engine room is located in the middle of the central enclosure in the space under two stairways which lead to the upper deck from either end of the boat Pia St ee pelt negra Ey ch ah poeta Da Sit RALN a RB WIR Doe Te tye che en ge ap eee.
