CoAmo, the lat- O est and in many respects the finest prod- uct of an American shipyard, sailed with a full passenger list on her maiden voyage from New York to Porto Rico. This modern combi- nation passenger and cargo vessel, designed by Theodore E. Ferris for the New York and Porto Rico Steamship Co., was built by the Newport News Shipbuilding & Dry Dock Co., Newport News, Va. The principal dimensions are: length overall 429 feet; length between perpendiculars 412 feet; breadth molded 59 feet 6 inches; depth molded to hurricane deck 35 feet; maximum load draft 24 feet 6 inches; displacement at the de- signed load draft of 23 feet 6 inches, 10,400 tons; and, deadweight capacity at load draft 4100 tons. Represents Shipbuilding at Its Best There are six decks designated as follows: lower, main, hurricane, promenade, boat and_ shade decks. Accommodations have been fitted on an unusually elaborate scale for 287 first-class and 90 second-class passengers. The total cargo ca- pacity is 237,700 cubic feet, 130,900 cubic feet of which is insulated for perishable products. Propulsion is accomplished by means of a sin- gle screw driven by a 6000 shaft horsepower New- port News - Curtis impulse cross compound tur- bine through double reduction gears. The boilers, five in number, are of Scotch type, oil fired with forced draft. The sea speed is 16 knots. An inspection of the CoAMO will fully sub- stantiate the statement of the owners that the 11 eee eos ‘ 1 eee Cee S. S. Coamo, a combination passenger and cargo vessel for the service between New York and Porto Rico public rooms, lounges, tea room, dining saloon, music room, deck veranda, sheltered dancing deck, library, writing room and the smoking room have been laid out with exceptional care for con- venience and comfort, that they are finished in excellent taste and that the quality, design and arrangement of furniture, draperies and hangings compare favorably with the best homes and clubs. The decks are spacious and the forward portions are glass enclosed. Staterooms and cabins de luxe are particularly well planned and are finished and equipped to delight the most critical sense of comfort and refinement. The use of teak, in doors and trim, the ex- cellent quality of all joiner work and the reg- ularity and neatness of all exposed steel work creates.a decidedly pleasing impression of crafts- manship of high order. Modern Steam Drive Has Advantages But with due respect to the many excellent features of the hull construction of this vessel it ig the engine and boiler rooms that are truly remarkable. It is impossible to convey a true impression of the high order of engineering skill in design and workmanship, the sense of confi- dence, solidity, order, neatness, coolness and cer- tainty of performance that a personal inspection gives. The writer was convinced from the moment he looked upon this equipment that the day of the reciprocating hand coal fired steam installation is unalterably gone even were it possible to build
