These fer- ries are quite similar to those constructed for the Ann Arbor & Pere Marquette rail- roads. They are large, powerful and fast and are good ice breakers. The Manitowoc Ship- building Corp. has built a numberr of these modern carferries. Works The carferries GRAND RAPIDS and MADISON are similar to the Ann Arbor and Pere Mar- quette ferries in construction being built on the transverse system of framing. Both of these ferries are classed by the American Bureau of Shipping and their scantlings are in excess of the bureau’s requirements in certain instances.
