“The only fleet to come through” . Another page was written into the large and ever-growing volume of F-M Diesel performance proofs dur- ing the ice jam on the New York State Barge Canal last December. The camera caught the staunch F-M equipped tugs “Sterling” and “Chilton” as they battered their way through the ice at Albany on December 9 when the jam was at its worst. It was a fight between engine stamina and almost impass- able ice floes—and the engines won — brought through 29 loaded barges. Each of these 88-foot tugs is equipped with a 240-hp. Fairbanks- Morse direct reversible Diesel driving 68-inch propellers. The engines were installed in April, 1926, and have given steady, flaw- less service ever since. According to the owners—the Marine Transit Corp. of New York —this was the only fleet to come through the memorable ice jam of December 9! “Coming through” is a Fairbanks- Morse characteristic—a character- istic that is written into the logs of hundreds of vessels.
