Cramp & Sons Ship & Engine Building Co. for the Eastern Steamship Co., are equipped with two De Laval, two pinion, double helical speed reducing gears, each transmitting 3800 H. P. to one of the screws. De Laval geared power plants have been adopted for the most notable passenger and high speed freight vessels recently built in the United States. The Eastern Steamship Company has had De Laval gears in service for several years on the ‘‘ Boston’’ and ‘New York’’.
