GRAVING DOCKS in Repair and Reconditioning Work PX A series of talks, of which this ae } S&S is the second, on the importance : of this type of dry dock forsurvey, observation and repatr activities, WG ae The obvious advan- tages of a graving dry- dock over the floating drydock is clearly demonstrated in the rebuilding and recon- ditioning of the Tanker ““Agwisun”, which was sunk during an explosion in Brooklyn last year. Surveys developed that the entire ship from amidships quarters to the boiler room casing aft had been practically destroyed. The back of the vessel had been broken. To float the vessel to a draft that per- mitted her to be drydocked was unusually difficult owing to her weakened amidships condition. Had she been pumped out too far amidships she would have cracked and broken the other way. To prevent this, pre- cautions were taken that permitted of suc- cessful raising to a 16’ depth and on a favor- eit ar able tide was placed in a graving dock. The cribwork be- ing ready on the dock floor, the tanker settled straight and true, disclosing every stress and strain oc- casioned by the explosion, and in the re- building, which occupied not more than four months, she is, in every respect, prac- tically as good as new. Had the work on this vessel been done in a floating dock, there would be little or no possibility of having the preliminary sur- vey show some of the weaknesses and strains that have been located and corrected.
