PARLOR ROOMS WITH TWIN BEDS AND BATH ATTACHED. THERE ARE TWENTY SUCH ROOMS now under construction at the Davie Shipbuilding Co., Quebec, and will go into service next year. With the addition of the three new vessels to the existing ones, the Can- ada Steamship lines will have a mod- ern fleet of ships on the lower St. Lawrence which will be second to none for this type of service. Launch S. S. California The largest American passenger vessel, the S. S. CALIFORNIA, was suc- cessfully launched at Newport News Shipbuilding & Drydock Co. on Oct. 1. A large party, invited guests of the International Mercantile Marine Co., owner of the ship, and of the shipyard, attended the launching. The day was clear and very warm. The party from New York was headed by P. A. S. Franklin, president of the I. M. M. company He was ac- companied by Mrs Franklin and their daughter, Mrs. Roland Palmedo, who christened the famous vessel. Others in the party from New York were: John H. Thomas, and A. C. After the launching a lunch was tendered the guests at the Tide Water club by the shipyard. Mr. Franklin and the sponsor, Mrs. Roland Pal- medo, were introduced by Homer L. Ferguson, president of the Newport News Shipbuilding & Dry Dock Co., and addressed the diners in brief appropriate speeches. Gen. A. C. Dalton also made an address in which he pointed to Mr. Franklin and himself as friendly rival man- agers of large shipping groups. He expressed the hope that the time would come when it would be pos- sible to have a high class passen- ger service across the North Atlantic under private ownership and opera- tion. One of the remarkable features in the construction of the CALIFORNIA is the degree of completion which has been attained while on the _ stocks. She is said to be nearly 85 per cent completed and delivery is planned for December.
