Light Weight Auxiliary Engines Grow in Favor IGHT weight auxiliary engines directly connected to generators and compressors for installation in tug boats, pleasure yachts, etc. are in great demand because they operate on the same kind of fuel as large size marine diesel engines and for this reason eliminate the necessity of carrying gasoline on board ships. The Bolinders Co. Inc., New York, recent- ly added these light weight units to its line of marine engines, type W316A being shown herewith. These light weight oil engines are built into auxiliary units driving air compressors, generators, pumps of all types, hoists, etc. and are made in three sizes, 6-7, 12-15 and 25-30 brake horsepower in one, two and four cyl- inders, respectively. Turning at 1000 revolutions per minute and burning standard diesel grade of oil, they weigh little more than a gasoline en- gine of the same horsepower. The construction of this type of engine is simple. The counterbalanced crank shaft is supported on S.K.F. roller bearings, producing a smooth and vi- brationless drive. A built-in water pump maintains the proper circulat- ing water in the cylinder Jackets at all times.
