Progress upon the new ship building plant which the Risdon Iron Works is erecting in San Francisco is entirely satisfactory to the officials of the company, who announce that the yard will be ready for ships of any size or kind within the next few months. The company has several con- tracts on hand at the present time and is rushing the erection of steel buildings and the installment of tools as fast as it can be done. Liberal orders have been placed with eastern manufacturers for tools of all descriptions used in the construction of steel vessels of such sizes as to i is founding is the most significant evidence of the great development which is expected in Pacific coast ship building, a development which is sure to grow with the export trade of the nation. The company is at present building two vessels; one the twin-screw wooden steamer George F. Haller, 108 ft. long, for the North Alaska Salmon Co.; the other a steel steamer, 138 ft. long, for L. D. Baker of Boston. Mr. Robert Curr, who is well known among ship builders and ship owners on the great lakes, is to take the position of ship building superin- tendent of the Risdon works. The plant is arranged with a view to the utmost economy in handling material. The company has an area of about 35 acres and a water frontage of about 2.000 ft. which, however, will be increased by means of wharves. During the past year this company remodeled the Pacific Steam Whaling Co.’s tow boat Shelikof, which is 121 ft. over all, 23 ft. beam and 9 ft. 6 in. deep; and also the stern-wheel steamer Potrero. When the plant is fully equipped the Risdon Iron Works will become an energetic com- petitor of other ship yards on the Pacific.
