1900] MARINE REVIEW. 23 ‘It is. well enough, as proposed by the war department, to station watchmen at the St. Clair Flats canal, so as to prevent, if possible, a repetition in that waterway of the blockades that have occurred in the St. Mary’s river ditring the past season, but what is really wanted is a second canal at the flats. A blockade in this narrow entrance to Lake St. Clair would prove far worse than either of the Sault river disasters. It would practically stop everything afloat on the lakes. It certainly seems strange that the vessel interests are not making a determined effort to secure the construction of a second St. Clair canal and that at once, espe- cially in view of the moderate expense (compared with the great interests involved) at which the work could be done. But the gravity of the situa- tion will probably not be realized until a vessel is sunk in the present narrow canal. re OF SALE. Steamer C. W. Moore. Built in 1881.
