Description
This oil painting depicts the catboat-rigged yacht Wayward sailing on a choppy sea in what appears to be a sailboat race. Two gaff-rigged sloops trail the catboat on the same tack, with a steam yacht pictured in the distance. The scene is likely set on Lake St. Clair, as catboat were very popular at both Detroit yacht clubs, 1890-1910. The painting is by Thomas Chilvers, a yachtsman, pianist, composer, and director of music education in the Detroit Public School System for 33 years.
