Description
"U.S.S. Yantic at Sea" by Robert Hopkin is undated and shows a distant view from starboard bow of the gunboat in heavy weather under shortened sail. A brass plaque on the frame indicates that the object was purchased from Beatrice Larned Massey and presented to the Brodhead Naval Armory, Detroit, “by the men of the U.S.S. YOSEMITE, 1937."
The Yantic had a long career in the U.S. Navy, prior to being assigned to the Michigan Naval Militia in Detroit as a training ship. Judging from the stylized treatment by Hopkin, this image was painted in the last decades of his life. The Yantic was assigned to Detroit in 1897 and used as a training platform prior to the militia’s service on the U.S.S. Yosemite during the Spanish-American War. The painting was donated anonymously to the Dossin Great Lakes Museum collection.
