- Description
- This oil painting of the J.T. Wing by Henry Bernahl shows the three-masted schooner under full sail. Built in New Brunswick, it served a varied coastal trade before coming to the Great Lakes to haul lumber. After closing out the age of commercial sail on the Lakes, the J.T. Wing was beached at Belle Isle on the Detroit River and became the Museum of Great Lakes History in 1949. Due to extensive deterioration, she was closed to the public in 1956, and replaced by the Dossin Great Lakes Museum in 1960.
This painting was commissioned for the museum by the Great Lakes Model Shipbuilders Guild, forerunner of the Great Lakes Maritime Institute. - Date of Original
