- Description
- This portrait of William Livingstone was discovered in the DHS collection in 2006. While beautifully executed, there is no indication of the painting’s origins. Livingstone was a successful Detroit merchant, publisher and banker best known for helping to found the Lake Carriers Association. As president of that organization, he helped improve safety and navigation, and is memorialized by a Detroit River channel and a marble lighthouse on Belle Isle. This image captures him in his mature years. Livingstone died in 1925. Donor is unknown.
