- Description
- This oil painting illustrates the two-masted schooner Columbian under a full press of canvas. The vessel was launched at the yard of W.H. Wolf at Fort Howard (Green Bay) in 1864. She was intended for ocean use, and made two trips to saltwater, first from Chatham or Wallaceburg, Ontario, to Nantes, France in 1865, then later from Alpena to England a decade later. Both cargoes were lumber. COLUMBIAN spent the rest of her time on the Great Lakes carrying lumber and coal, until being wrecked in 1913. Donor is unknown.
