Description
The wooden steam propeller Atlantic was built in Cleveland in 1863, and over a long career served on all the Great Lakes. At the time this painting was created by Seth Arca Whipple in 1883, it was owned by the Grummond fleet of Detroit, and ran from Cleveland to Mackinac. This ink-and-watercolor is rare because Whipple usually worked in oils. The painting, originally part of the John Poole collection, was purchased for the Dossin Museum by the Great Lakes Maritime Institute.
