Description
This watercolor of the motor yacht YOREDA (1929) was painted by the donor, Fr. Edward J. Dowling, S.J. for the Dossin Great Lakes Museum's collection. It shows a starboard profile view of a white yacht, double decked with one mast and one stack and is signed at the viewer's lower right "Edward J. Dowling, 1968".
Yoreda was owned by Detroit businessman Aaron DeRoy. It was built by DeFoe Boat and Motor Works in Bay City, Michigan. The vessel name is simply "A. DeRoy" in reverse.
DeRoy was a dentist who became an early executive in the automobile business in Detroit, owning first a Hudson-Essex dealership, and later a Studebaker dealership. He established the Aaron DeRoy Motor Car Co. and was the founder and president of the Michigan Automotive Trade Association. DeRoy was an avid fan of yachting and powerboat racing prior to his untimely death in 1935. His wife Helen became a major benefactor to the arts in Detroit, and donated funds for an events hall at the Dossin Great Lakes Museum, named for her husband.
